New York Solidarity Coalition for Katrina/Rita Survivors

Wear a Green Ribbon

It is 2008, over two full years since Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Black, poor and working class people are still living in the ravages of this government’s gross negligence and racism. Under the leadership of HUD Secretary, Alphonso Jackson, and the approval of the New Orleans City Council, over 4,500 livable affordable housing units are being destroyed! This is in addition to over 45% increase in rents, 2/3 of pre-Katrina housing stock destroyed, 40,000 families to be evicted from trailers by April/May and over 200,000 residents still displaced throughout the country. Why is the US Government allowing this to happen?

The major News papers, TV, and Cable stations gives us more news about Brittany Spears personality disorder instead of keeping the public informed of the genocide taking place in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Since the Government and the corporate media wants to tell us more about Brittany Spears and LSU football team winning the national title instead of the tragedy taking place in New Orleans, it is our responsibility to keep
this issue on the national table and demand justice for Katrina and Rita survivors.

We ask every one who have witness this tragedy to support the National Green Ribbon Campaign which stands for Justice for Katrina and Rita Survivors. Wear a Green Ribbon
that stands for reconstruction of the Gulf Coast and the following demands:
• The Right of Return for the Black majority to New Orleans
• Affordable housing for all (Stop HUD demolition of public housing Now!)
• Pass Senate Bill 1668 – The Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act of 2007
• Stop the police and government harassment and brutality against peaceful
protest.

The crisis for black, poor and working class people in New Orleans is only a sharp reflection of the national social, economic and political negligence, disparities and racism across this country. It is time for us to speak out and demand justice for this social horror.

In 1955, the people in Montgomery Alabama, fed up with the social horrors, indignities and racial segregation of that time – Boycotted the city Bus service for 381 days! If they can do that – In 2008 we can wear Green Ribbons to keep attention and pressure on thegovernment for reconstruction of the gulf coast – it’s the very least that we can do.

In the spirit of the Civil Rights, Black Power Movement, Dr, Kings and Rosa Parks birthdays, Black History Month and for all those ancestors whose shoulder we stand on– it is time for us to act. It is also time for the unions and anti-war movement to follow our lead against this war at home. Let’s build awareness, take action and demand Justice for Katrina and Rita Survivors. Justice for Katrina and Rita Survivors
